It’s time to review our local Albertsons, its coupon
policies, and other ways to save while shopping there.
Albertsons is by far my favorite grocery store in
Rexburg. I love the weekly sales,
because they are the best in town and normally coincide with the available
coupons circulating in newspapers and online.
I have scored many great deals there and always wait eagerly for the new
weekly ad to come out so I can see what the next awesome sale will be.
There are a few things you should know when shopping at
Albertsons.
Loyalty Program
Albertsons did away with its loyalty card a couple of years
ago. It used to be that you had to scan
your card to get special sale prices.
Now, the sale prices are automatic for everyone. For a while you could still use the loyalty
card to accumulate points for discounted gas prices, but in October of last
year that program was done away with as well.
I was told that these changes were made in an effort to
bring better sales and lower prices to all customers, not just those with a
loyalty card that lived close to a participating gas station. Albertsons currently does not have any
official loyalty program; rather, the hope is that the sales and shopping
atmosphere will create loyalty in itself.
Coupon Policy
Albertsons strives to be a coupon-friendly store and its
coupon policies are pretty standard.
Here is what you need to know:
1. They accept manufacturer coupons from the
newspaper and those printed off the internet.
2. Internet-printed coupons for a free item that
does not require any purchase are not allowed.
3. If a coupon’s value is greater than the item’s
price, no cash back will be given.
Either the coupon’s value will be adjusted to match the item’s, or
another item can be added to the transaction to absorb the overage. So, if you have a coupon for $2.00 off an
item that costs only $1.59 then you could buy a candy bar as well and the extra
$.41 from the coupon would apply to the cost of the candy bar.
4. Manufacturer coupons can be used with store
coupons. Often there are store coupons
in the weekly ad, and if you have a manufacturer coupon for the same item you
can “stack” them both for a better deal.
5. Internet-printed coupons over $5.00 are not
allowed.
6. If a coupon printed from the internet (such as
those from coupons.com) prints with another store’s logo then it will not be
accepted, even if it says “manufacturer coupon” at the top. This is a bit of a gray area because many
other stores will ignore the logo because the coupon is in fact a manufacturer
coupon and therefore meant to be used everywhere. I have discussed the matter with the store’s
director and he is currently reviewing the policy. If/when any changes are made I will let you
know!
7. If a coupon won’t scan, but all the fine print
matches the product you are trying to purchase, then the cashier can enter the
coupon manually.
Other Tips
Keep an eye on the Albertsons weekly ad. There are often great coupons included that
don’t even require clipping. All you
have to do is show the cashier the ad and he will scan it with his handy, dandy
scanner gun.
Also look for a monthly ad that is available in the
store. It is called the “Big Book of
Savings” and has coupons and other deals that last the entire month.
Another way to save at Albertsons is at their Sav-On
Pharmacy. There is often a promotion running for customers that are filling new
prescriptions or transferring them from a different pharmacy. The current deal is for a $25 Albertsons gift
card with a new or transferred prescription.
I have received over $100 in gift cards over the past year by taking
advantage of these promotions. It is
important to note that these promotions exclude Medicaid prescriptions.
With the Albertsons/Safeway merger finalizing only a few
weeks ago, we are in for some changes.
“Good things are coming,” the store director, Kevin Stevens, told
me. I can’t wait to see what they are!
